John Fullen has been studying martial arts for over 20 years and instructing since 2007. He is a Renshi instructor in Toushi Kan and Shotokan.  He has studied in China at the Shaolin Temple and have earned Shi Fu status in the art of Shaolin Gung Fu. His Shaolin Dharma name is Shi Yan Zi awarded to him by the Abbot  of the Shaolin Temple after he participated in a special Buddhist induction ceremony in San Francisco.

He took  a team to compete in the North American Shoalin International Tournament held in Los Angeles. The team won an award for  “Top 10” team out of over 60 teams in the competition.  In addition he won First place in the Long Weapons Masters division.

In the summer of 2015, I once again trained in China where I tested before the Venerable Abbot of the Shaolin Temple, Shi Yongxin, for my Black Sash. I was part of the first group ever in 1500 years to test for “Rank” before the Abbot, other than actual monks, and received my Shaolin Gung Fu Black Sash.

In the summer of 2017, I returned to China to study at the Shaolin Temple and test for my Red Masters Sash before the Venerable Abbot of the Shaolin Temple, Shi Yongxin. Again it was a first for this type of test for a non-monk in the history of the Shaolin Temple. I received my Red Sash and official grey robe from the Shaolin Temple.

It is a great honor that I will forever cherish and I will use this experience and the many things that I have learned to enrich my curriculum and enhance the skills of my students.
