Tucson Dragon Classic Tournament

** Registration Closed **

We are excited to announce our Tucson Dragon Classic Karate Tournament!  We will organize this tournament by pre-assigning students into divisions and groups.  Each group will have no more than ten competitors and will be assigned to a specific ring at an assigned start time.  Once the students report to their assigned ring they will compete in all the events in that particular ring until finished.

This tournament’s registration fee includes a 6 event package!

White, Yellow, & Green Belt package includes (Fastest Fist, Fastest Kick, Strongest Punch, Strongest Kick, Crazy Attack, and Flag Sparring).

Blue Belt package includes (Fastest Fist, Fastest Kick, Strongest Punch, Strongest Kick, Kata, Flag Sparring)

Purple Belt package includes (Fastest Fist, Fastest Kick, Strongest Punch, Strongest Kick, Kata, Sparring)

Orange Belts & Above package includes (Updated Thunder & Lightning, Mushin, Kata, Board Breaking, Sparring, Noodle Battle)

We will have an option for “add ons” when registering so you can order the EXCLUSIVE Tournament patch and t-shirt.  You will pick these up at the event.

“Students, who attend tournaments, gain a very valuable learning and rewarding experience. Attending a Tournament gives a new insight into the skills taught at class, which students simply cannot gain at regular class attendance alone.”

“The events are fun and easy to understand. Your instructor will show you exactly what to do in class.   It’s a great experience you won’t want to miss!  All competitors will receive Olympic Style Medals for placements!  Everyone goes home a winner!”

Participant Requirements:

Competitors must check in 30 minutes prior to their scheduled start time.

Check Station will be located in front of the Main Gym.  Competitors will receive a wristband upon checking in with their division group # and competitor # written on the wristband.

Note: Division and Group #'s relate directly to the ring assignment.  For example, A1 will report to Ring 1, C3 will report to Ring 3.

Competitors will wait with their families until we call for their group (A1, A2, etc.) to report to the ring staging area.  The staging area will be located directly next to the Ring.

Ring 1-6 will be located in the Main Gym.

Pre-ordered T-shirts and Patches will be available at merchandise located outside the main gym. Additional merchandise can be purchased on the day of the event.

No food or drink inside the gymnasiums!  Closed-topped water bottles will be acceptable.  Please help us out to keep the venue clean by using trash cans throughout the venue.

FLAG SPARRING:  Open to White - Blue Belts ONLY.  Contestants can test their speed, footwork, accuracy & reactions in a safe but competitive setting by grabbing three flags from their opponent. The first to remove the flags from their opponent within a 60-second round is the winner!

SPARRING:  Open to Purple Belt & Above. For those who participate in a sparring class. Sparring is judged as continuous sparring.  Judges will determine the overall best fighter at the end of a 90-second round.

Thunder & Lightning:  Open to Orange Belts & Above. Updated: The ultimate combination of strongest and fastest! Contestants will have to perform the following three techniques in order; (1) Middle punch, (2) Front Kick, (3) Turning Back Kick to a "meter" bag that measures their power and speed.  The total power of all three techniques will be divided by the total time to determine the final score.

MUSHIN: (No-Mind Defense):  Open to Orange Belts & Above. This event is designed for an athlete to defend against impromptu attackers by showing multiple self-defense techniques.  Instructors will prepare athletes with knowledge of the self-defense techniques available from the following list.  Judges will pick three of the following self-defense techniques for the athletes to defend against Bear hug pinned from behind, Double one-arm (on forearm), Side Headlock, Straight lapel grab (one hand), Cross wrist grab, Single straight hand grab (to wrist).  Proper etiquette is required throughout.  Athletes will be judged on using a preemptive and a finishing technique with each self-defense technique. There will be 2 Judges and an attacker in each ring.

BOARD BREAKING:  Open to Orange Belts & Above. The athlete will have two boards and perform a continuous, 2-strike combination using a hand/hand, hand/foot, or foot/foot combination.  Athletes will only be judged by which attempt the board breaks. Athletes may change their technique within those three attempts.  If the athlete cannot break the board in 3 attempts, the athlete will bow out.  (An athlete who breaks the board on the third attempt will be judged the same as an athlete who breaks the board on their first attempt. In other words, there is no penalty or reward for which attempt the board breaks)  These students can use open-hand techniques. Techniques using knuckles and in-step of foot are forbidden.  Students must perform one break with the board in an instructor's hands and the other with the board placed on cinder blocks. The breaks can be done in any order—proper etiquette throughout.   Boards used at the tournament will be 1/2" thick for all ranks and ages. These boards can also be purchased for further practice for $4/board.

Noodle Battle:  Open to Orange & Above. Contestants will spar using a 27" pool noodle, representing an escrima stick.  The whole body, including the head, is a target area.  This event will be judged as point sparring, stopping the match when a point is earned.  The first to five points wins within a 60-second round! Complete Sparring gear and faced headgear are required.
